Distinctive Design
/ Lotion Applicator
Project Scope
Distinctive Design contracted Definitive Design to design and engineer
a “lotion applicator” for applying lotion, creams, ointments,
or medications to ones’ back or other hard to reach places.
Challenge:
- Brainstorming different methods of locking the attachment heads to
the handle
- Researching materials that would work best to meet the client’s
expectations
- Making the handle able to fold for easy travel, but engineering
it to remain sturdy when in use
Development Path
- Industrial Design/Concepts & Renderings
- Preliminary Engineering
- Material Research
- Prototype (SLS)
- Finalize Engineering
- Cast Samples
- Manufacturing Support
The Result:
Throughout brainstorming sessions Definitive Design’s team of
designers and engineers suggested making the Lotion Applicator more versatile
by including loofah, pumice stone, and sponge attachments. The client
agreed to add the additional attachments and was very enthusiastic about
the increased market value. From the initial renderings all the way through
to manufacturing support Definitive Design offered Distinctive Design
an end to end solution above and beyond their expectations. The Lotion
Applicator was released in 2008 via retail stores, infomercials, and
the Internet. It was also showcased in the housewares section of the
Winter 2008 Innovation magazine.
