Project Scope

Stydahar & Associates contracted Definitive Design to engineer and design a hair brush that eliminates the pain and damage caused by brushing through tangled hair, particularly for girl’s ages 3 to15. Their patented concept require bristles that travel around the perimeter of the brush to slip past tangles.                        

Development Path

• Industrial Design to create an attractive and ergonomic design that reinforces the product’s name – ‘Orbit’.
• Preliminary Engineering done in Solidworks along with several mock-ups and experimental models to test different mechanisms.
• SLS prototypes to check the fit and function.
• Final Engineering to incorporate the findings from the prototypes and documentation for our Offshore Manufacturer.
• First Article Inspection to check that parts from our offshore manufacturer are within the specified tolerances.

The Result:

Definitive Design successfully implemented a tensioning mechanism that allows the user to control the resistance of the bristles, customizing the brush’s resistance to the user’s hair type. The OrbitBrush is effectively satisfying a need in the marketplace and has been featured on many different websites/blogs. Just recently the brush was featured on the “The Today Show”.
