Cryptek / cTERM
Business Objective
Definitive Design was contracted to
evaluate, recommend and design a new packaging solution that would:
- contain the proprietary Cryptek encryption and support circuit boards
and peripherals
- be easy to assemble in order to reduce labor costs
- reduce the part count to achieve additional cost savings.
Development Path
- review client-supplied Industrial Design
- provide mechanical design to make the design manufacturable and to
secure the supplied internal components.
- grow SLA engineering check model for internal and client review
- refine mechanical design based on SLA model
- cast urethane components in order to validate design
- select materials for production
- produce production drawings
The Result
The new Cryptek CT100 met all of the criteria
specified by the client while reducing the cost relative to the previous
design. The cost reductions
were achieved by reducing the assembly time from two hours to approximately
10 minutes, by reducing the part count significantly, and reducing the
number of fasteners from around 50 to just 15.
