Linear Light Wave / TV
Slideshow, Digital Photo Viewer
Project Scope:
Linear Light Wave came to us with a need to develop an exciting new
idea. They wanted to create an inexpensive way to enable someone
with little or no knowledge of computers to view digital photographs
on their television.
We needed to conceptualize and produce working samples for marketing
Linear Light Wave’s idea to a larger corporate identity. This fully
functional prototype had to be ready in time for the 2000 Comdex Trade
Show, which gave us only five weeks!
Once we discerned the internal space limitations dictated by the electronics,
we were able to conceptualize the exterior packaging. In accordance
with our client’s wishes we provided a clean simple design that
included both a base unit and hand held remote.
We provided seven concepts for each component, and then refined three
using color renderings. Once a final concept was approved, we developed
the product in 3D CAD. Using these advanced tools we were able
to prove fit and assembly details, taking into account space allocation
and mounting for the electronics, mechanical devices, and the human interface.
Prototype models were produced which verified the fit and function. Finally
we produced the Comdex samples in 4 different cast urethane colors, 3
of which were translucent, ‘iMac-style’ materials.
We literally went from spoken ideas to a fully functioning prototype
in 5 weeks. We accomplished this by capitalizing upon the seamless interconnection
of Industrial Design, Engineering, and Prototyping, all of which are
found at one site, Definitive Design.
Success note: Linear Light Wave was successful in selling
this product idea to Microsoft.
