Labnet International, Inc. / Prism
Design:
Definitive Design was contracted to develop a new air-cooled microcentrifuge that incorporated high speed performance, effective air cooling, and quiet operation into one compact modern design.
Challenge:
The friction with the air in the bowl can cause significant temperature increases that could damage the sample material. In addition, the motor and large transformers required to power it, generate extreme heat that needs to be controlled. Lastly, the centrifuge rotor is constructed similar to a real fire or air raid siren causing a very loud howling like noise.

Deliver:
By working with Labnet's employees, reviewing feedback from thousands of their Life Science customers worldwide, and utilizing our in-house experience we were able to develop the best full-service package within cost and time constraints. We accomplished this by delivering a unique air management system that was developed to bring air in from outside the unit, through a scroll below the bowl and up on the underside of the rotor. All while allowing for high speed performance and effective air cooling. Also, by employing multiple walls in all directions relative to the bowl and selective use of damping materials it was possible to keep the noise level significantly lower than expected. Lastly, the modern design of the control panel and fit-lid latching system contributes nicely to the aesthetics.
