Sales and Marketing Need

Definitive Design was asked to design and build a working mock-up of InTank’s Online Tank Inspection System (OTIS) robot for use at trade shows.  The mock up’s purpose was to imitate all functions of the actual robot: motion, sonar, ultrasonic sensing, and navigation.  The robot was also required to move back and forth on the track automatically or manually.

Development Path

• retrofit a lightweight aluminum chassis made to the actual OTIS drawings to hold the motors and effectors necessary to clearly demonstrate the functions of the robot
• design an attractive track that incorporated the appropriate motion sensors and cables to control the robot.
• Add mirrors to allow inspection of the undercarriage
• design and implement production of the electronics
• program a STAMP micro-controller to actuate light and sound through a custom made ergonomic control panel
