Business Objective
Design a simple mechanical Injection Port Detector to replace the existing product that used expensive electronics to perform its’ function.Product DefinitionInflatable breast implants are used to expand skin after surgery to allow for breast reconstruction.  Saline is injected into the implant in small amounts over a period of time until the desired size is achieved.  In order to inject saline into the implant a self-sealing port must be located beneath the skin.

Development Path

• produce design sketches
• build foam study models
• create 3D to reflect product engineering
• grow SLA proving model
• cast urethane sales samples in color
• provide production documentation

The Result

Definitive Design used a simple gimbaled magnet to locate the port which precluded the need for expensive electronics.  The reduced detector cost transformed the procedure into a more financially attractive option for surgeons resulting in greater adoption of the process.
